Style-of-Life is the concept that serves as the centerpiece of Alfred Adler's theory of personality. The popular term,
lifestyle
, bears only a fragmentary resemblance to the great psychologist's formulation, though it may well have evolved in popular culture from his usage. A few Adlerian practitioners use the terms interchangeably, probably the result of some misguided effort a generation ago of wanting to piggyback on the more popular term in an unnecessary attempt to make Adler look more contemporary. Adler's views were so progressive and expansive in the early part of the 20
th
Century that they inspire us still to heights and horizons beyond our current outlook. Adler used the term Style-of-Life in a scientific way and defined it as
an organized set of convictions about life of which the individual, at best, is only dimly aware.
He meant by this that we have a governance system in place for our lives, but even though we carry it out with a strong sense of purpose, we do so without clear knowledge of its existence. Adler's protege, Rudolph Dreikurs, practicing in Chicago, clarified Style-of-Life by declaring that it was made up of three elements: Our self-image, world view and ultimate purpose. Then Dreikurs and
his
disciples further simplified Style-of-Life by stating it could be articulated for a person by her completing three short sentences...
I am: (self-image)
Life is: (world view)
My central goal: (ultimate purpose)
Completing these three sentences form the backbone of activities for readers of
YOUR INNER CEO
. Depending on the content of the sentences, readers can determine for themselves whether or not their Styles-of-Life are constructive or destructive. If the former, then their Styles-of-Life serve as a guardian presence for them. If the latter, they serve as looming threats and need to be replaced.
YOUR INNER CEO
shows readers how they can do this to enhance their lives generally, and improve their performance on the job specifically.
